Alison Hayman joined the firm in 2005 as an associate in the Intellectual Property Group. Previously, Alison was an associate at another large Toronto law firm. She advises clients on the protection, enforcement and licensing of intellectual property, with a focus on trademarks, copyright and domain name disputes.

Alison advises clients on the acquisition, protection and enforcement of trademark rights, including clearing trademarks for use and registration, prosecuting trademark applications, conducting opposition proceedings and advising on infringement matters. Alison also assists clients with domain name disputes, including CDRP and UDRP proceedings, with the protection of copyright, licensing of intellectual property and intellectual property aspects of corporate transactions. A large part of her practice involves protecting brands and proprietary material on the Internet. Alison Hayman is a Registered Trade Mark Agent in Canada.

Representative Transactions

Alison Hayman acts as intellectual property counsel to a variety of organizations and has assisted on recent transactions including:

  • Acted as intellectual property counsel to Trader Media Corp. in its acquisition by Yellow Pages Group for C$436 million.
  • Represented Yellow Pages Group in connection with intellectual property law matters in the completion of its C$760 million acquisition of Classified Media (Canada) Holdings Inc. from Trader Classified Media International Holdings.
  • Acts as IP counsel to one of Canada's largest telecommunications firms in the areas of trade marks, copyright and domain names.
  • Has managed the domain name portfolio of a major publishing company and negotiates domain name disputes and acquisitions relating to the portfolio.
  • Manages the trademark portfolio of a major nutritional supplements manufacturer and protects the company's brands on the Internet.
  • Acts as Canadian IP counsel to many foreign firms seeking trade mark protection in Canada.
  • Has advised advertisers on ambush marketing issues related to Olympic advertising.
  • Provides ongoing counsel on trademark, copyright and licensing agreements to Community Care Access Centres and other non-profit organizations in Ontario.
  • Recently represented a Canadian university in the sale of its book publishing division.
