McMillan LLP is pleased to announce the appointment of the Honourable Stockwell Day, member, Queen's Privy Council (P.C.), as a Senior Strategic Advisor to assist the firm in expanding its interests in the Asia-Pacific region and South America. Mr. Day assumed his responsibilities effective July 1, 2011, and will be working out of the McMillan Vancouver office while supporting the Hong Kong office.

"McMillan is very fortunate to have someone of Mr. Day's experience and reputation join our ranks," said McMillan CEO Andrew Kent. "McMillan is quickly becoming Canada's legal and professional Pacific Gateway, able to lend insight, infrastructure and expertise to help Canadian business extend and advance their Asia-Pacific interests. Mr. Day adds additional depth and capacity to that already robust professional platform."

In a public service career that spanned twenty-five years, Mr. Day served as an MLA, MP and as a senior cabinet minister at both the provincial and federal level. Notably, he served as President of the Treasury Board, Minister of International Trade, and as Minister responsible for the Asia-Pacific Gateway between 2008 and 2010. In that capacity, he brought a determined focus on expanding commercial and cultural ties with Asian countries and China, in particular.

"I feel very fortunate to be welcomed to the McMillan team as its expertise, presence and commitment to the Pacific-rim markets continue to attract and assist Canadian businesses," emphasized Mr. Day.

Mr. Day also serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation. His extensive travel in the region, expertise in the fields of finance, energy and commodities and detailed appreciation for business and political custom throughout Asia will be of immense value to McMillan and to the services it provides to clients located in Canada and abroad.

Over the past few years, McMillan has built an enviable practice in Asia with proven capacity to service the needs of corporate clients. That offering has been strengthened by the 2011 merger with Lang Michener LLP, delivering offices in Vancouver and Hong Kong, as well as a team of accomplished and respected overseas legal professionals.

In joining McMillan, Mr. Day becomes the most recent addition to its list of accomplished advisors and senior counsel drawn from the worlds of public service. This list includes: Hon. John D. Reynolds, P.C., Sen. Yoine Goldstein and Timothy J. Murphy.

"As Minister for International Trade and the Asia Pacific Gateway, Stockwell Day was a champion for stronger commercial ties with Asia. He is passionate in his belief that closer relations with Asian countries are vital for Canada's economic future, and is now playing a vital role outside of government to help the private sector and civil society connect to Asia." -- Yuen Pau Woo President and CEO Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.

"Stockwell Day was a very able Minister of International Trade who understood the importance of personal relationships in China and worked hard to advance Canadian business interests in Asia in general and China in particular" -- Peter Harder, President of Canada China Business Council and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

"McMillan has created a best-in-class legal and professional services team in Hong Kong for the benefit of Canadian business and Mr. Day will be an invaluable addition to that roster of strong and able experts". Stephen Wortley, Chair, McMillan Hong Kong.
