Professional Activities
Lai-King Hum joined the Toronto office of the firm as an associate in the Employment and Labour Law Group in September 2007. She is licensed to practice in both Ontario and Quebec.
Prior to joining the firm, Lai worked as bilingual counsel in the Professional Regulation Division of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Before that, she worked at prominent firms in both Quebec and Ontario where she focused on either commercial and corporate litigation or employment law. She has appeared before both Quebec and Ontario courts, and before administrative tribunals.
In her employment and labour law practice, Lai assists local and international corporate clients in all aspects of employment/labour law, at both the provincial and federal levels. Her work includes advising on pre-employment negotiations, difficulties arising during the employment relationship (including absenteeism and discipline management, harassment claims, disability policies), the termination of employment relationships, employment standards, human rights complaints, grievances, and collective agreements. She is also engaged in employment law litigation and labour relations work, and the development of HR policies. She further advises on employment/labour implications of corporate transactions, including risk management in reorganizations and workforce reductions.
Lai also has a practice acting in a general counsel capacity on professional regulation issues, particularly in relation to policy development, governance, accreditation, licensing, as well as acting as counsel on judicial reviews and appeals. She has also advised on complaints, investigations and discipline within the professional regulation context. She leads the firm's Professional Regulation Group.
Her clients include those involved in: healthcare, education, professional regulation, First Nations, wholesale and distributers, travel and hospitality, and security.
Lai is fluent in both English and French, and also speaks some Mandarin and Cantonese (Toisan).

Community Involvement
Lai believes in "giving back".
She is President of the Ontario chapter of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers ("FACL"), a diverse coalition of Canadian lawyers of pan-Asian origin working to promote equity, justice and opportunity for Asian Canadian legal professionals and the wider community. FACL is a national organization with provincial chapters, and is affiliated with the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, with over 40,000 members.
She is the immediate past-Chair and current member of the executive of the Education Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association.
She is also a former member of the Board of Directors, and served mainly as Chair of the Human Resources Committee, Chair of Governance, and member of the Marketing and Fundraising Committees at Serve! (formerly Serve Canada Youth Service Organization, a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of disadvantaged youth in the greater Toronto area through experiential learning). She continues to actively support Serve!
Lai is currently Counsel to the Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax-Pickering.
