Professional Activities

Louis J. Zivot has been a partner in the firm's Vancouver office since 1990.  Louis' practice focuses on civil litigation and administrative law including insurance defence litigation, products liability, accidental death, life and disability claims, mining, transportation and other commercial disputes, employment and labour law, and plaintiff personal injury and medical negligence.

Louis has argued cases at all levels of British Columbia Courts, the Federal Courts Trial Division and Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada in addition to cases before the British Columbia Labour Board, labour boards of arbitration, Human Rights Tribunal, Canadian Transportation Agency, private arbitration panels and other administrative bodies.

Louis has participated in numerous successful mediations of civil disputes and has trained as a mediator of civil disputes.

Teaching Engagements

  • Guest Instructor PLTC Civil Litigation mock trial Speaker at conference on the administration, handling and resolution of disability claims.
Representative Transactions

  • Defence counsel in an asbestos liability case, Hunt v. T & N plc. et al, a leading authority in many areas of civil liability, procedure and constitutional law.
  • Acted for mining companies in many disputes over the locating of mineral claims, conflicts between mining companies and other land users.
  • Acted as counsel in numerous cases for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia in the defence of motor vehicle claims and also represented private out-of-province automobile insurers.
  • Counsel for parties in matters of judicial review from administrative bodies before the Courts of British Columbia and at the Federal Court of Appeal and have prepared submissions to many internal review boards including Workers Compensation matters and appeals from arbitration boards to the Labour Relations Board.
  • Advise employers and employees in both union and non-union environment on day-to-day employment issues in the work place. 
  • Counsel for parties involved in rail transportation disputes before the Canada Transportation Agency and the Federal Courts.
