Professional Experience
Mark is a Partner in the Pensions and Benefits Group of McMillan LLP. As an expert in pensions and benefits law, Mark helps clients recognize, understand and manage financial and other risks inherent in sponsoring, administering and funding pension and benefit programs. Mark provides focused and pragmatic strategies and advice to guide clients through increasingly complex pension and employee benefit challenges. The outcome is pension and benefit programs that comply with legal requirements, and are well managed, valued by participants, and cost effective to plan sponsors . Specific areas of expertise include advising clients on regulatory compliance, pension plan design and documentation, governance structures and fiduciary duties, administration of pension and benefit programs, investment management, third party service provider arrangements and outsourcing solutions. Mark also counsels clients on legal options and strategies arising in corporate transactions, reorganizations, insolvencies and bankruptcies.
Mark joined McMillan from Aon Hewitt, a global human resources outsourcing and consulting services firm, where he served as a member of Aon Hewitt's Canadian Executive Team and Aon Hewitt's Global General Counsel Leadership Team, providing legal advice, management and strategic direction for all Canadian business segments. Prior to Hewitt Mark was a partner in the Pension and Benefits group at a national full service law firm and also worked as counsel at a global trust company. Mark has been working in the pension and employee benefits industry for almost 20 years.
Mark was a member of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (the Ontario pension and insurance regulator) Legal Advisory Committee (Pensions), was Chair of the Ontario Bar Association Pension and Benefits Section Executive, and was a Member of the Editorial Board, Estates, Trusts & Pensions Journal . Mark is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of Inner City Angels, a not-for-profit organization providing art's education opportunities to disadvantaged children.
Mark has written numerous articles for industry publications including Benefits Canada, Taxation of Executive Compensation and Retirement and HR Reporter and has spoken widely at industry events.
