Professional Experience
Max Mendelsohn practices in the Insolvency and Restructuring Group from the Montréal Office. His practice is concentrated in areas of advising commercial enterprises, financial institutions and insolvency practitioners. In addition to his primary areas of practice, Max acts as a formal and informal mediator, and arbitrator with respect to commercial disputes, sits on the Board of Directors of corporations and advises commercial enterprises.
In 2010, he was awarded the designation "Avocatus Emeritus" by the Barreau du Québec (the Quebec Bar), and in 2011 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Turnaround Manangment Association (Montreal Branch).
He is widely renowned as a pragmatic deal-maker. He is recognized in many national and international directories including the Best Lawyers in Canada 2013 as a leader in Banking and Finance Law and Insolvency and Financial Restructuring, the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2012 as a leading practitioner in the area of Banking & Financial Institutions and Insolvency & Financial Restructuring, 2008 Lexpert/American Lawyer Media's Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, the Chambers Global Directory of the world's leading lawyers 2013 and the Best of the Best Expert Guide 2012. Max was also nominated as one of the world's leading practitioners in the International Who's Who of Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers.
Max is a frequent speaker and panel participant on bankruptcy and insolvency law reform, trans-border insolvencies, bankruptcy and insolvency legislation and other topics related to banking, insolvency and receivership. He was retained in 2005 by Industry Canada to serve as private sector advisor with respect to legislative insolvency reform. In 2003, he addressed the Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce of the Senate of Canada, as part of a panel of experts, on the same topic. He previously served as private sector advisor to the Government of Canada with respect to the 1997 insolvency legislation reform. He lectured for several years on the law of bankruptcy and insolvency in the undergraduate program of the Faculty of Law of McGill University and has frequently lectured at the Meredith Memorial Lectures sponsored by the McGill Law Faculty.
