McMillan Named Among Canada’s Top Employers For Young People For A Second Consecutive Year

News Feb 9, 2018

For the second consecutive year, McMillan LLP has been named one of the winners of the 2018 Canada’s Top Employers of Young People.

“This is a terrific acknowledgement that means we continue to create environments which prove a desirable workplace for young, educated, professionals in the legal industry,” says McMillan LLP, National Director of Human Resources, Nisha Rider. “We strive to foster collaboration, innovation and diversity, and winning this award two years in a row confirms that we understand the needs of young professionals looking to forge a career in law.”

Canada’s Top Employers for Young People is an editorial competition that recognizes the employers that offer the nation’s best workplaces and programs for young people at the beginning of their careers. The winning employers lead the nation in attracting and retaining younger employees to their organizations.

“In the competition for talent, a key variable for millennials and Gen-Z is the ability to connect their work with greater meaning –that’s where  winners of this year’s competition excel,” says Kristina Leung, Senior Editor of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which  manages the competition. “Whether on a personal or professional level, the employers  chosen for this year’s list provide opportunities for career  growth and advancement  – as well as opportunities to  support broader social causes through community projects and volunteerism.”

In 2017 McMillan had a hire back rate of 92 per cent, ranked 9th of all the Bay Street law firms. Marlene Kane, National Director of Professional Development says the young professionals are powerful driver for changing the way things are done at McMillan through innovation and collaboration.   “We are excited by the tremendous potential of, and the opportunities presented by, our young talent.”

Sean Coughlin, associate lawyer, believes the mentorship and training he received at McMillan gave him the skills to help build his practice.  “Starting as a summer student at McMillan was great – the program, the training that you get right from the beginning followed by the practical hands on experience gave me a whole new perspective at law school when I went back for my last year,” he said. “I felt very prepared when I returned to the firm as an articling student and when I became an associate.”
