overview

Mike has extensive experience in all aspects of oil and gas law both in Canada and internationally and has been recognized for several years as a "Leading Practitioner in Energy - Oil & Gas" (Lexpert), as a "Leading Lawyer in Energy - Oil & Gas" (Chambers Global The World's Leading Lawyers) and as a "leader in Natural Resources Law" (The Best Lawyers in Canada). With his cross-border experience, Mike prefers and makes all attempts to cut away adversarial attitudes, positions and posturing and helps all involved parties "find and cross together the common goal line".

Mike has been retained by other Canadian law firms as an expert on oil and gas litigation matters, has been qualified as an expert in the United States and before the Alberta courts, and has provided expert opinion reports and evidence at trial. Mike wrote the Canadian oil and gas text for Halsbury's Laws of Canada, originally published in late 2009, updated as a second edition in 2013 and as a third edition in 2017. He is also the Author and General Editor of Canadian Oil and Gas, 3rd Edition (LexisNexis) that features commentary, forms and precedents as well as access to all federal and provincial legislation dealing with the exploration, production, conservation, transmission, sale and taxation of oil and gas.

Mike's clients include private and public companies (junior, intermediate and senior) both in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Mike currently serves on the Board of Directors of both public and private oil and gas companies in Canada and internationally (including Resource Royalty Ltd.) as well as being President and CEO of The Carrot River Valley Land Company (Limited), a Canadian oil company incorporated in 1905. Additionally, he serves as a Strategic Advisor (international oil and gas opportunities) to a US based private equity fund, 4Gen Capital and was named one of Alberta's 50 Most Influential People by Alberta Venture Magazine.
