Professional Activities

Peter Jarosz joined the firm's International Trade Group in Ottawa as counsel in August 2010. Peter offers advice regarding international trade remedies including anti-dumping, countervailing (anti-subsidy) and safeguards, import/export compliance including export controls and GST/customs duties, WTO, NAFTA and other trade agreement issues, and other federal laws and regulations such as controlled goods and defence production, food inspection, textile labelling and consumer packaging/labelling and other federal regulatory requirements.

Peter has assisted on medium to very large M&A transactions as part of multi-firm, multi-jurisdictional transaction teams, was part of broad corporate marketing, commodity taxation and logistics planning with counsel and corporate executives, and conducted administrative litigation. He has appeared before various public regulators, administrative tribunals and courts including the Canada Border Services Agency, Canadian International Trade Tribunal and the Federal Court of Appeal.

Peter previously practiced at one of Canada's 10 largest full-service law firms focusing on mergers and acquisitions, which served the largest of Canada's corporations and other Canadian and foreign businesses.

Representative Transactions

  • Represented the Canadian aluminum extrusion industry in obtaining significant dumping and countervailing duties and an injury finding against certain aluminum extrusions from the People's Republic of China
  • Advises importers on compliance with Canadian import laws and in administrative litigation regarding same including: Patagonia, Canon Canada Inc., Toshiba of Canada Limited, Ricoh Canada, Regal Confections, Polar Electro Inc./Sport Dinaco Inc. and Tommy Hilfiger Canada Inc.
  • Represented Nortel Networks ("Nortel") in successful litigation regarding customs penalties issued to Nortel
  • Advises exporters on compliance with Canadian export control laws and in permit application and voluntary disclosure to the Export and Import Controls Bureau of the federal Department of International Trade
  • Represented Essar Steel Algoma Inc. in successfully obtaining dumping duties and an injury finding against certain steel plate from the Ukraine and in obtaining extensions of injury findings against certain steel plate from Romania, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic
  • Represented the Government of Taiwan in obtaining a termination of the subsidy investigation regarding certain fasteners from Taiwan
  • Represented U.S. and Canadian distillers in obtaining two consecutive no-injury findings in two injury hearings regarding certain grain corn from the United States of America
  • Featured in Lexpert for representation of U.S. household appliance manufacturers in the dumping investigation regarding certain household appliances from the United States of America
