public policy advocacy
Long regarded as one of the pre-eminent public policy law firms in Canada, McMillan approaches all competition law matters with sensitivity to public policy considerations that may have an impact on the Competition Bureau, other federal or provincial government departments, interest groups and the media. This sensitivity contributes to our success in handling controversial mergers and other high profile matters. Our strong presence in Ottawa has facilitated our ability to maintain strong relationships with important governmental departments and agencies.
For over three decades, our Competition Group has participated in the development of Canadian competition policy. We have appeared as experts in competition policy before committees of both the Canadian House of Commons and Senate, and foreign bodies such as the OECD, the International Competition Policy Advisory Committee to the U.S. Department of Justice, and the International Competition Network. We are consistently among the most active participants in public consultations on proposed reforms to the Competition Act and Competition Bureau enforcement policies on behalf of clients, through professional associations or in our own professional capacities.
Domestically, McMillan acts as the principal advisors to the Competition Policy Group, an industry group that actively participates in Competition Act reform processes. Internationally, McMillan acts as the principal advisors to the Merger Streamlining Group, a group of multinational corporations seeking to reduce the time and cost of international merger review processes.
