vancouver office
The Vancouver office offers two types of student programs: the summer student program and the articling student program. Both programs are subject to the rules and requirements of the Law Society of British Columbia.
Summer Student Program
The summer student program runs from the beginning of May to mid-August. The program provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas and to work directly with partners and associates on client matters. While McMillan does not offer a formal rotation program, students may be assigned work from all practice areas. If students have a specific area of interest, we make every effort for them to work in that area of law. We anticipate most, if not all, of our summers students will return to article with us.
The summer program begins with a week of orientation and training sessions, together with in-house seminars. Our summer program also includes numerous social events.
Articling Student Program
The articling student program runs for 12 months and includes the 10 week Professional Legal Training Course held off-site. A 2 week paid vacation period is included. The program is divided into a solicitor's rotation and a litigation rotation; the length of each rotation varies according to the individual student's interests. Students work directly with partners and associates on client matters and are encouraged to seek work from lawyers who practise in areas of interest to the student. Students are considered important and valued members of the team and are given responsibility backed up with guidance. They are also provided with support by their principals, who will meet with them on a regular basis. We are proud to state that we have been able to offer associate positions to a majority of our articling students.
The articling program begins with a week of orientation and training sessions. Students are also offered in-house seminars and select CLE courses throughout their articles. Evaluations are conducted as part of articles. Social events, dinners and lunches are organized for our students throughout the year.
What Do We Look For?
McMillan looks for students who are perceptive, diligent, motivated to succeed and whose level of academic achievement demonstrates the potential to provide the highest quality legal service. We also look for well-rounded, creative, and mature individuals who can make a positive contribution to our work environment and the profession in general. While academic achievement is important, we place a great deal of emphasis on interpersonal skills which are critical to success in our client service-focused firm.
For a more personal view of the types of students we have hired recently, we encourage you to read the profiles of our students. Please also feel free to contact any of our students directly to learn more about why they chose McMillan.
General Timing
For temporary (summer) articles, we recruit students at the beginning of their second year of law school. We do not currently hire first year students.
With respect to the articling program, we see it as a natural extension of our summer program. The number of summer students we hire therefore correlates with the number of articling students we would like to have, as well as with our projected future associate requirements. Students are welcome to inquire whether we will be participating in an external recruitment process in a particular year; however we anticipate that most, if not all, of our summer students will return to article with us.
Application Process
Students should contact their law school's Career Development Officer (CDO) regarding the application process. Students interested in an articling position or a summer position with our office should submit applications in accordance with the voluntary guidelines and application deadlines issued by the Vancouver Bar Association www.vancouverbar.ca. In some cases, your school's CDO will collect application packages and courier them to firms in advance of the deadlines.
Application Packages
Applications should be sent by mail and addressed to our Student Coordinator and include a cover letter, resume, copies of undergraduate transcripts and law school marks to date, in addition to a list of second year courses (for summer articling applications) or proposed third year courses (for articling applications). Letters of recommendation are optional.
